World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls on June 20 each year and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
Global Trends Report was published by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) before 20 June World Refugee Day. According to the report, the number of global forcibly displaced people in 2019 due to war, conflict and persecution increased by approximately 9 million people compared to the previous year. The report pointed out that the number of refugees and asylum seekers across the world broke a record at 79.5 million.
WEFA International Humanitarian Relief Organization, aside of providing humanitarian aid around the world, also realizes aid activities for refugees. WEFA’s aid activities for refugees can be summarized as follows:
Regular Support For Refugee Children
Undoubtedly, children paid the heaviest price in the ongoing Syrian war. The Syrian and Lebanese orphans who are living in Turkey are regularly assisted by WEFA in the framework of “Orphan Sponsorship.” WEFA, which supports orphans’ vital expenses such as food, shelter, health and education through the “Orphan Sponsorship Programme”, regularly delivers aid to 4,166 orphans, including refugee children.
WEFA Does Not Leave Syrian Refugees Alone
WEFA performs aid projects for Syrian refugees who are living in Turkey and Lebanon. We also assist those in need, distribute winter aid and Qurban aid, especially Ramadan aid. WEFA also distributes Eid clothing to refugee children.
WEFA ensures annual aid to the refugees who took refuge in the Arsal Camp, Lebanon after escaping from the civil war in their countries and struggle to survive in tents, houses made of plastic or tin. We provide aid like carpets, winter clothes, food packages and diesel for the refugees’ stoves. Furthermore, WEFA also shared food and iftar aid to refugees living in the camp during the month of Ramadan.
WEFA initiated aid efforts worldwide within the scope of combating the coronavirus pandemic, and provided hygiene packages to refugees in Arsal Camp, Lebanon.
Moreover, WEFA has sent 13 truckloads of flour to Syrian refugees staying in the Reyhanlı district of Hatay and in Kilis in previous years.
Syrian refugees taking refuge in Turkey were given 1,500 canvas tents through the Turkish Red Crescent in 2016.
WEFA has also shared Qurbani aid to Syrian refugees living in Austria.
A Helping Hand for Rohingya Refugees
WEFA provides regular aid to Rohingya refugees who escape from Rakhine, Myanmar and struggle to survive in camps in Bangladesh with food supplies, clean water, shelter, health, education and winter aid. WEFA also delivered Ramadan and Qurban aid, and visited Arakan camps a number of times.
WEFA, within the scope of the Water Well Project, provided clean drinking and portable water to refugees trying to hold on to life under difficult conditions in Rakhine Camps.
WEFA Does Not Forget About Burkinese and Somalian Refugees
WEFA, within the framework of Qurban aid, has ensured the distribution of Qurbani and zakat aid to Somalian refugees in Dadaab Camp, Kenya.
WEFA has also carried out aid activities in Barsalogho, Kaya city, Burkina Faso. WEFA has delivered food aid to the Burkinese refugees who were forced to leave their villages and try to live in tents as a result of the attacks of racist radical groups.
Hot Meals for Refugees in Bosnia-Herzegovina
WEFA, within the framework of 2019/2020 winter aid, carried out aid operations in Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina. WEFA also distributed hot soups to refugees from Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Morocco and Algeria; distributed hygiene packages to 200 people and gave clothing aid to our partner institution in the region to be given to the refugees.
Shopping Voucher aid for Refugees in Switzerland
Families staying in a refugee camp in Switzerland were given shopping vouchers within the framework of Ramadan aid. This refugee camp hosts refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Turkey. A total of 124 refugee families benefitted from the aid project.
Ramadan Aid to Refugees in Germany
WEFA, within the scope of Ramadan aid, distributed hot meals to refugees and refugee families for 30 days in the “WEFA Ramadan Tent” established in Cologne, Germany in 2016. In the same year, WEFA organized a breakfast program for refugees on the first day of the Ramadan and it stood by the refugees on this important day.
Moreover, “Brotherhood and Meeting Picnic” was organized for the refugees. In the picnic held in Cologne/Rheinufer, Germany, games were played with refugees who were mostly Syrian, and Syrian dishes were enjoyed.
WEFA volunteers, who visited the refugee dormitories in Ravensburg and Weingarten cities of Germany within the framework of the 2016 Ramadan aid, distributed iftar and sahur meals to the needy people in the areas.
